A man was walking along a beach. He could see a child in the distance bending down. There were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand. The kid was picking them up one by one and throwing them into the ocean.
The man was stuck by the futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. Still, the kid continued to pick up starfish one by one and throw them into the ocean.
As he came up to the kid, he said: “You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The kid stooped down and picked up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean, then said to the man, “It sure made a difference to that one!”
As Teddy Roosevelt said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
