Deep Seer Diving

Sometimes people get the mistaken notion that spirituality is a separate department of life, the penthouse of existence. But rightly understood, it is a vital awareness that pervades all realms of our being.

If we are going to learn anything from the death of celebrities like Phillip Seymour Hoffman who die with needles in their arms on the floor of their New York penthouses, I can only hope its to stop running away from ourselves. Come home to a little self acceptance, and you will be at home anywhere whether it’s a penthouse suite or a basement hovel.

Fame, fortune, religion, fancy meditation practices, impressive yoga moves, secluded ashrams…all fine, but also big traps. The trap is that we use them like a drug of choice; we imagine that something is missing in our life, so we go searching anywhere other than where we are. In truth, enlightenment is the same in the penthouse as it is on the ground floor, because in either place you are still there, mostly alone with your own deep craving for self acceptance.

As Jay Asher said,

You can’t get away from yourself. You can’t decide not to see yourself anymore. You can’t decide to turn off the noise in your head.

The only enlightenment is a mindset and a heartset (a vital awareness) that you  are always, already whole. Right here, right now, just as you are. You’ve spent so long chasing your cravings in other places, trying to be who you think you’re supposed to be and burying your true essence in layers of protection, that your memory is hazy.

Reclaim wholeness, remember to remember who you are at heart. This is the path of awareness, and it happens in daily life, chopping wood and writing checks and riding trains. With awareness, you see how critical and divided you’ve become. You also get your own invitation to a cease fire on judgment. Take the war out of self aWAReness, make a truce with craving and self loathing, a post war agreement to be fully, freely and unapologetically YOU.

Awareness is about being a seer, not attaching to what you see but diving deeper and getting to know the seer. Its a deep seer dive into what some traditions call non duality, or non judging awareness, self acceptance by any name. Over the next few weeks, I will write more about awareness as a lead up to my next en*theos class which is called “How to Dive Into Deeper Awareness.”

Its a free one hour video where I will outline my top ten ideas about Awareness. We will also have time for some question/answer/ dialogue which is always the best part. You can join in live for free or else subscribe to a monthly en*theosAcademy subscription and have access to ALL the classes, at any time that suits you.

who you are 3

Why am I focusing on awareness? Because it takes you to the heart of who you are. Nothing is more imporant. It brings peace of mind, makes you a more effective friend, lover and change agent. It improves your intuitive decision making skills, and decreases your anxiety. Awareness also transforms habits that may or may not be serving you. Shine the light of awareness on a habit and it becomes a choice. Awareness is the mother of all choices and empowerment. Bottom line, awareness is transformative.

Awareness is not easy.  You don’t like what you see at first. You turn away and hide. But get beyond what you see, and feel some compassion for the seer and the seer will give the same gift back to you, and then you will realize that it IS you. Elizabeth Gilbert expressed it nicely

We search for happiness everywhere, but we are like Tolstoy’s fabled beggar who spent his life sitting on a pot of gold, under him the whole time. Your treasure–your perfection–is within you already. But to claim it, you must leave the busy commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego and enter into the silence of the heart.
