The Space In Between

August 9th, 2010

Once
spoken so clearly
in a language we all understood.
Yes. It was that simple.

Now I’m not so sure
of what to do.
Move closer, step back
or just smile, from way over there.

Sometimes the gap’s so big
that I could fall right in
not knowing what to grab.
Them?

I needed that space
when they were little
Let me breathe I’d sigh.
Not now

I should have known
everything changes,
and held on a little longer
before we let go.

It doesn’t need to be painful.
It’s not about me
but it is,
painful

Growing up and apart
on an elastic string.
Colliding and catching
after pulling right back.

There is no rhythm, beat
nor perfect step.
We’re making it up
as we go, along.

Along
to this new space in-between
to watch it fill up
with more trust and respect.

But its as it should be
and we’ll all be ok.
For without this gap
there would be no room to come back
