this summer, a time of small loves
hot wells, country stuff, black horsehair
no shadow withers or sunlight fades
i hold my breath with you.
a sideways glance, with glimpy eyes
long, long legs and witty feet,
green stars shine the path of wings
i hold you in my arms.
flaring and fitful, hot breeze of sweet
glowing scarlet and golden cinders,
the radiance blooms and seems to breathe
i look through mirrors at you.
across the old carpet floor, a hedgehog
flicks and stares,
my singing rises, you roar and punch
i kneel, eyes down, back, toes bare.
leaves rock from side to side on silk
the sky throws clouds like cannonballs,
down where the sea boils great fish
i fold my hair for you.
perfumed paper and silver women
this heat plays mischief on me,
two brass bright balls, i juggle and throw
my laughing mouth swallows sky falls.
