Inclusive Spirituality

July 13th, 2010

Life is a circle and your life is a mandala that stretches around the world with your own unique design and patterns. There are other beautiful mandalas. They have their unique designs as well, each weaving in and out of the others. The connections make each mandala stronger and the whole circle healthier. The circle has no beginning and no end, just infinite connections and elastic flexibility. It expands without losing its shape or strength.

From where you stand in the circle you hold the hands of pioneers who came before you, and you reach out to hold the hands of adventurers who come after you. With awareness and compassion, you embrace ever more people and groups. Where once you stood in a circle of just family and friends, you now stand with lovers of life the world over. Where once you stood in a circle of fellow Methodists or Lutherans you now stand with spirit seekers from all denominations and religions and people of no faith, stretching to include all beings. With each new embrace, your consciousness expands and you become more yourself.

This is the inclusive spiritual gospel, or good news – you are part of the family of all beings. When you recognize that separation and division are illusions created by your ego to bolster your small self, you are saved from your own fear. Life is too short and there is too much beauty to experience to remain trapped in fear’s shadow. This salvation can happen today. You don’t need to wait. Don’t make excuses. The table is ready. Consider this an altar call to the table that includes all beings without exception. You have inclusiveness and unity built into your DNA, if only you would get beyond the fear.

Emerson said, “Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.” Step out of the way of your own brilliance and the solar rays of your connections, and fear’s shadows will shrink to a manageable size. You are ONE with all things and all beings, and your life is an adventure of holding hands with more and more beings in the great circle of life.

Growth in spiritual inclusion is an inside job first and foremost. As you embrace all aspects of yourself, you liberate yourself to embrace all aspects of what you see around you. The mirror that the world holds up to your soul reflects beauty from every angle. It’s like holding a mirror to a mirror – beauty all the way back and all the way forward. You make earth shattering connections between your own feelings and responses and the events of life. You realize that you don’t see things as they are, you see things as YOU are.

You have a life to live and connections to make and your life expands and deepens with EVERY encounter you have. Don’t delay. Get to work, living your life in growing and glowing orbits.

As the poet Rilke said:

I live my life in growing orbits
which move out over the things of the world.
Perhaps I can never achieve the last,
but that will be my attempt.

I am circling around God, around the ancient tower,
and I have been circling for a thousand years,
and I still don’t know if I am a falcon, or a storm, or a great song.
