Yours and Mine.

October 4th, 2011

What’s mine is not yours.
For what’s mine is mine
and yours is yours.
Let’s just get that clear
I say
to the both of us,
from mother to child

Draw the line.
Then follow it
to where it begins
and see
who is holding marker in hand.
Who drew it, walked it,
and now needs to own it.

Once named and claimed
would you reach across
to take this bundle?
I’ve been carrying it a while.
See, it’s yours
not mine.
I can no longer wear it,
for although I tried,
it just wont fit.

And while we’re here
crossing over a bit
I notice
that you might have
a few things of mine.
Here, let me take it from you
as you’ll need both hands
to carry
what’s yours.

So here we stand
on the now smudged line.
You holding yours
and me carrying mine.
Awkward and wishing
to just give it all back.
For I don’t really want
all this that I’m holding.
It hurts and pokes
and sticks into my side,
and the weight of it all
makes you seem so tired.

But to know real freedom,
and find peace from pain
as hard as it is
I will claim mine,
and you dear loved one
must do the same.

  4. What an amazing piece of writing. I love that it is so obvious to the two characters that the feelings of awkwardness can be eliminated/minimized by giving the other person’s stuff back. Great work! Will definitely share with clients and colleagues.
